It’s been nearly a decade since Phoebe Philo marked the finale of the Spring Summer 2011 Céline show by stepping out on the runway sporting the now iconic Adidas Stan Smith sneakers. Since then, the former creative director of (old) Céline has been largely credited with the evolution of women’s white sneakers. A shoe once reserved for the tennis court, women’s white sneakers are now a fashion staple in the closets of fashion editors and influencers alike. The white sneaker has become a comfortable and chic must-have. What we thought was just another trend back in 2011 has proved itself to be a classic that’s here to stay.
With their stark white colour and structured shape, sneakers can work as both a statement piece and a wardrobe basic. White sneakers can be worn just as easily with a satin slip dress as with a pair of fitted trousers.
While the Adidas Stan Smith is perhaps one of the most recognizable styles of white sneakers, many other brands have rolled out their own version of the shoe; each with a twist unique to its label. Whether it be an embroidered design, colour blocking, or logomania-inspired laces, these styles are a fun deviation from classic white sneakers.
